First Thoughts: Where's the buzz?

Where's the buzz surrounding the possible 2012 Republicans?... Politico says Hillaryland has its eyes on 2016, not 2012… Obama speaks at rally for O'Malley at 3:15 pm ET… While we all focus on the DE and AK Senate races, don't forget about CO, IL, PA, WV, and WI… GOP outside money groups have an 8-to-1 spending advantage… "Hicky, blue-collar look"?... About last night's Crist-Meek-Rubio debate… Profiling VA-2… And Blumenthal and McMahon square off in another debate.

*** Where's the buzz? President Obama today hits another rally (for Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley), after recently drawing 26,000 in Wisconsin. But looking ahead to 2012, we've heard some Republicans ask: If the GOP's '12 nominee was out there, wouldn't that person already have a considerable following? After all, conservatives and Republicans right now are displaying unprecedented enthusiasm, energy, and engagement about the coming midterm elections. That's largely why Republicans are poised to make big gains next month. But given this GOP excitement, it's striking that -- outside of Sarah Palin (and she could be more exciting to the media than to the base) -- none of it has rubbed off the potential '12 Republicans.

*** Comparing '06 with now: In 2006, due to his rock-star status campaigning for other Democrats, political observers could already sense that Obama would be a BIG deal if he ran for president. Ditto Hillary Clinton, whose march to Senate re-election was attracting plenty of buzz. Right now, the only Republican outside of Palin who's even approaching the same buzz that Obama and Clinton received in '06 is someone who has said he won't run: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. There are A LOT of 2012 GOPers traveling the country (Romney, Pawlenty, Huckabee, Santorum, etc), and none is even close to getting real buzz in the base of the party right now.

*** Speaking of buzz about 2012 (and also 2016): Thanks to Drudge and cable TV's need to feed the beast, we're not sure the Hillary-Biden "Trading Places" story is really going to go away, despite strong denials by the White House and Clinton. Indeed, Politico yesterday noted that Hillaryland's true target isn't VP in 2012 but rather president in 2016. "Not happening," one of her 2008 campaign's topmost figures said about Clinton becoming VP in '12. "Stay tuned for 2016." More: "Many in Clinton's broader circle assume that she is positioning herself with an eye toward that 2016 bid – not that they claim to have first-hand knowledge of it. 'Once you run for president you always want to be president," James Carville … told POLITICO when he was asked about Hillary Clinton's prospects. "My assumption is that once you've run you're going to run again." Of course, the whole story was written on the premise of making an assumption about her ambition. Those closest to Hillary acknowledge folks AROUND Clinton are more interested in seeing her run again than the prospective candidate herself. In fact, she's actually starting to get into a groove in her current job and starting to enjoy more this year than she did last year.

*** How quickly we forget 1994: The Politico article also made this point: "The renewed buzz around Clinton's prospects, though, has been driven by the political weaknesses of Obama and Biden. Fanned by a media eager for conflict and fascinated by all things Clinton, the spark for the notion of Clinton's return to politics comes from her original argument against Obama. Clinton made the case in the Democratic primaries that Obama would be unable to win among working-class white Democratic voters. The Democrats head into the midterms profoundly weak among some of those same white voters - though Obama's biggest problem remains with Republicans, and pollsters argue that their real problem is a lackluster Democratic base." Yet here's our question: If Bill Clinton couldn't avoid what happened in '94, then do we think Hillary as president would be any stronger than Obama is right now, especially with unemployment at 10%? Classic grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side analysis.

*** Obama's day: As mentioned above, President Obama delivers remarks at 3:15 pm ET at a rally for Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley at Bowie State University, a historically black college. Then, in the early evening, he flies to Chicago to speak at a fundraiser for Alexi Giannoulias at 7:00 pm ET.

*** Don't you … forget about me: While the political and news world fixates on the Senate contests in Delaware (because of Christine O'Donnell) and Alaska (because of Todd Palin's nasty-gram email to Joe Miller), we want to remind folks that there are MUCH more competitive and consequential Senate races out there. Some examples: Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. In fact, these are, perhaps, the five CLOSEST Senate races in the country, and they rank near the bottom in coverage. Hmmm

*** GOP outside group's 8-to-1 spending advantage: On Tuesday, we wrote about how GOP-leaning outside groups were blowing away Dem outside groups in TV ad spending. Here are some fresh numbers a source sent us: From August until now, GOP groups have spent nearly $41 million in key Senate seats, including $8.8 million by American Crossroads and $14 million by Crossroads GPS. By comparison, Dem groups have spent just $5.5 million in these states. That's an 8-to-1 advantage for the GOP. Wow…

*** The 'hicky' blue-collar look? Remember that recent tough TV ad the National Republican Senatorial Committee is running against Joe Manchin in West Virginia? The ad features three men -- wearing flannel and baseball caps -- having a conversation about how "Obama's messin' things up" and how Manchin "does whatever Obama wants." Well, it turns out those weren't West Virginians. Rather, they were actors shooting the ad from Philadelphia, and they weren't just actors, Politico reports. "'We are going for a "Hicky" Blue Collar look,' read the casting call for the ad, being aired by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. 'These characters are from West Virginia so think coal miner/trucker looks.'" All of a sudden, Manchin now has three things to hit GOP opponent John Raese with: 1) that Raese's wife is a resident of another state; 2) Raese's position on the minimum wage; and 3) this casting call that doesn't necessarily portray West Virginia in a positive light.

*** About last night: Here's the Miami Herald's take on last night's Crist-Meek-Rubio debate in Florida: "Marco Rubio got the front-runner treatment in a combative U.S. Senate debate Wednesday night, with both his rivals attacking him as a right-wing extremist out of step with Florida voters." Here's the St. Pete Times: "The surprise of the night was Meek, the Democrat trailing in the polls, money and enthusiasm. Meek was strong throughout the hour, landing some of the best lines." Here's ABC: "[I]n the end, neither Gov. Charlie Crist (I) nor Rep. Kendrick Meek (D) was able to knock frontrunner Marco Rubio (R) off his game." And here is the take from NBC's Adam Verdugo, who was there: It was clear that both Crist and Meek had Rubio in their sights. Rubio is the clear frontrunner in the polls and just before the debate, Rubio's campaign announced a record haul of $5 million in the last quarter, the largest from a Senate candidate this quarter.

*** 75 House races to watch: VA-2: The Democratic nominee is first-term incumbent Glenn Nye, and his GOP opponent is businessman Scott Rigell. In 2008, Obama won 51% in this district -- representing Virginia Beach -- while Bush won 58% in '04. As of June 30, Nye had nearly $1.3 million in the bank, versus Rigell's $227,000. Nye voted against the stimulus, cap-and-trade, and health care. Cook rates the contest as Toss Up, while Rothenberg has it Lean Republican.

*** More midterm news: In Colorado, Campaign Money Watch, a nonpartisan campaign finance reform watchdog group, is up with a big ad buy against Ken Buck… In Connecticut, Dick Blumenthal and Linda McMahon square off in another debate today.

All I can say is, if Sarah Palin has the largest GOP following,  the GOP will be TOAST in 2012.   No, I'm not a Democrat, but a former Dem who is now a conservative-leaning independent.   The GOP has a great opportunity to make great gains, but with Palin leading, they will totally blow that opportunity.

This data is a bit old and will be updated. It shows how little the "little people" have in this country and their share is dwindling.

The distribution of the wealth of the United States in 2006 can be explained with this example:

Total wealth - $100.00
Total population - 100 individuals
50 individuals in the lowest group would each have $0.05 (total $2.50)
The next group of 40 individuals would each have $0.70 (total $26.00)
The next group of 9 individuals would each have $4.00 (total 36.00)
The richest individual would have a total of $33.40.
My source is the Survey of Consumer Finance by the Federal Reserve.

For the year 2007 the net worth, by percentile of the distribution of net worth is as follows:
The 0 to 90 percentile group was 28.5%
The 90 to 100 percentile group was 71.5%.
For the year 2007 the net worth, by percentile of the distribution of income is as follows:
The 0 to 90 percentile group was 40.6%
The 90 to 100 percentile group was 59.4%.
My source is "Ponds and Streams; Wealth and Income in the U.S., 1989 to 2007 by Arthur B. Kennickell of the Federal Reserve Board.

When they branded themselves as "forward leaning" they basically said that they now pander for the Democrats. They are the media mouthpiece of the Obama administration.

    TERM LIMITS!

That is the ONLY way you are going to get lobbyists not to be able to influence these guys and gals in Congress. When those in Congress know they will have to return to the private sector instead of making a career out of stealing and spending the American people's money they will actually go to Washington D.C. for the RIGHT reasons.

And BTW no life long pension benefits for these people. I mean you serve a term or two, get voted out for doing a bad job and you get life long benefits? Absolute BS.

Agree Tracy but that wont solve it all. The lobbyists will only press harder and faster in the limited time they have.

      #54.3 - Thu Oct 7, 2010 11:07 AM EDT

Politicians take lobbist's money to put towards their re-election campaigns. If those Congress people are only in for one term then what's the point in taking money? In fact I can't see why lobbists wouldn't become extinct if there were term limits.

        #54.4 - Thu Oct 7, 2010 11:36 AM EDT

Sabrecat, you are totally correct unfortunately most people here are to blinded by their party affiliation they don't realize that both parties are killing the U.S.

          #54.5 - Thu Oct 7, 2010 11:55 AM EDT

I agree on the term limits as a possible solution. No pensions, normal benefits and than return to your civilian life; as the founding fathers intended.

The danger is the power might shift to the permanent employees; aides, researchers and thousands of others who make Congress function.

Without this Southern Oil, it's gonna be a long cold winter. Remember what Russia did to England last year. Turning off natural gas during the coldest days of the year. You sit back, tweet and surf the wb, freely. Vote Democrats back in, and those days will be numbered. I know, you're too blind to see. Get out of your house and visit America. Then you will see how good you got it. When Louisiana stops the oil from coming in the States and Texas closes the Gasoline Refiniries, how will you live. Better wake up, those days are very close!!!

What the Republicans need is a teleprompter reading candidate , that all of the media can swoon over, and who can be given the honors of being described as a" rock star". As with the previous candidate from the left that was given that description experience is not a requirement, as far as the media is concerned. Must be able to fool many voters into believing that positive change will happen ,then can go back on pledges made during the campaign.

Gary so true! The whole focus of this article is 'where is the buzz'? msnbc has made this what all the other uninformed masses have - a 'who's cool now' vote for president. People don't care to know the issues, they just want to be seen as being hip and cool; thus the moron we have in office now. I have friends in New Zealand who think Obama dresses nice but is an idiot - a view they say most of the world shares. Only those who are 'too cool' in this country feel otherwise. Maybe this time we can get a vote on substance and oh yes, some experience might actually be a good thing.

One Senator running for office spent $2.3 million in campaign money to win a job that pays around $170,000 a year or somewhere around that.

Why spend 2.3 million on a position that only earns a fraction of that amount???

Oooh wait...they can line their pockets with greed money and legal bribes (lobby $$$)!!! WOOHOO!

Harry Reid bragged that he was going to spend $24 million to defend his seat. Nevada has a total population of a little over 2.6 million people, not voters, people. Nearly $10 person. The arrogance of the man is incredible. All for a job that pays around $200,000 a year.

                    $2.3 million or $24 million.

Not as much as Meg Whitman spending $140 million in California's governor race or $100 million plus for Bloomberg in NYC Mayoral race. Both self financing much of their races. Both to work for a salary that is trivial in comparison.

The bigger issue is that it sure would be interesting to see where all that money is coming from. Big corporations are buying the candidates and once they are in office most politicians dance to their real bosses.

Most Dems give lip service to the little guy and try to put forward meaningful laws. But they wilt when it counts to actually pass meaninful legislation.

In my opinion the GOP doesn't even try to work to solve problems. They work to create problems.

This will never fly but I propose voluntary polygraph tests that politicains would agree to take BEFORE they take office.

Ask your candidate of choice what specialized training they've had to resist the lure of power and big money.

Ask your candidate of choice if they would voluntarily take a polygraph test each year they are in office and then one after they leave the office.

LOL...yeah ...right. I would LOVE to see a candidate that is truly honest and good use this as a campaign platform.

I would LOVE to see a candidate that is truly honest and good use this as a campaign platform

I think their assessment of Palin being more exciting to the media than to the base is right on. I have considered myself Republican pretty much my entire life, but I vote for who I think will do the best job. I have to admit, I got fooled by the Obama rhetoric into thinking he would really make some good changes. I'm not very satisfied. Then again, I might have voted for McCain had Palin not been his running mate. Not because she is a woman, I have no issue with a woman holding office, I just happen to think she is a total idiot and did not want her next in line for the presidency. I'm beginning to think that may have been the lesser of two evils.

Thank you........I have been asking this for Weeks! ALSO......."who, who, who" is paying for Mz. Obama to go campaign in six (6) states for the Dumos? The DNC should pay for this....NOT us!

Does anyone know who pays for her to go show off her J.Crew fashions and eat lobster?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting more scared every day!!!!!!

I was watching Rachel Maddow last evening; she was showing that 75% of the funding for the Republican Party was from three uber-rich individuals with 9% coming from other sources. Then the US Chamber of Commerce is accepting funds from foreign entities; the Chamber says that they are not using the foreign money towards campaign contributions, but somehow I don't believe them. As our church's treasurer, we have one savings account with the money divided into several "sub-accounts" on paper. The bank doesn't have any idea when funds are transferred from the savings account to the checking account which "sub-account" the money came from. I'm sure that you can see my point here!

It is very worrying to me that there is the great possibility that foreign money is being used to buy our elections. We can see the example of that with the outcome of the American Jobs bill in the Senate! Our schools are lagging behind other industrialized countries, yet the republicans are against any attempt to strengthen the curriculum and build up the future of this country.

Then, another concern is some of the candidates we have seen elected at the primary to run on the Republican side. At the very least they are Libertarian purists; at the worst, Christine O'Donnell is the prime example. I remember back in 2000 so many people justified their vote for George W. Bush stating that he was like them and was the kind of person you could sit down and have a beer with him. I personally do not want a President like me; I want the brightest who surrounds himself/herself with the brightest, most capable individuals available!

The the story comes out that companies are using money to buy back their own stock rather than development into new products. These companies are complaining that there is no one to buy their products; however, that didn't seem to be any concern to them when they shipped jobs over to China, India, etc. I remeber when the mortgage company I work for shipped jobs over to India; I asked if they would be getting any mortgages from over there. It didn't bother management to put workers over here who had mortgages with them out of work! How these companies expect people with no jobs to buy their products after the companies have shipped the jobs overseas is beyond me!!!!!!!! And then the companies and the representatives in Congress (Republicans) resent paying unemployment benefits!!!!!

Our country is messed up; we have the Republicans giving us the answer of NO!! If they win in November, there will be the continuation of the Bush policies from 2001-2006. The right wing punditry complains that the Democrats took over in 2007; however, they did not have a veto-proof majority to override President Bush's vetoes.

Businesses and the US Chamber of Commerce does not want progress for this country. They want the wealth of this country to belong to them and their Republican friends.

Those who want to see this country move forward need to vote on November 2. Prior to Ted Kennedy's death, there were 60 senators caucusing with the Democrats but that includes Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln. We know that Blanche Lincoln's seat will go to the Republicans with this election. Both Nelson and Lincoln voted with the Republicans more than the Democrats.

Just because the progressives didn't get everything that they wanted is no excuse for them not to vote. So, get out there on November 2nd and let your voice be heard!

So you watched Rachel Maddow. Do you have other sources to be informed of all sides or are you willing to stay ignorant? I stomach Rachel from time to time, and she tends to be the best comedy show on at that hour.

Seriously, have you read the Federalist's papers? Do you know what they are? Do you have your own, well researched, opinion, or do you accept the opinions of others? Be careful who you associate with, for you will become just like them.

I have discovered over the past 2 years I too was brainwashed, by the Republican party. My positions now do not mesh with either party, as you have witnessed many people in the TEA Party have rejected the Republican-backed candidates this primary season. The informed citizens are growing in number and I encourage those who have not started independent study as a replacement for TV and Radio to get started educating themselves as well.

Rachel Maddow as a source for this discussion! How silly.

I guess I would prefer to get my news from an individual who was a Rhodes Scholar with a PhD versus getting it from the Faux News crowd of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc. Wouldn't that be like getting your information from a drug addict and a drunk!!

Besides I don't get all of my news in one place. Sonmetimes I review the conservative sites as well. When I read those, I just shake my head in desbelief.

You get your news from Rachel Maddow, you may as well get it from Rush, in case you weren't aware business's are out to make money, so if things are causing them to lose money here or make money by shipping it over sea's what would you propose them to do,I guess they could keep those jobs here up until they go out of business.

                                            Julie;

Stop being so naive and gullible. All of that education does not make her any more credible on political issues than anyone else. She may be very knowledgeable in her field but that does not take the bias out of analysis. She is about as left as you can go and she is corny.

My advice is to get your NEWS from other sources and just chalk her up as a terrible comedian.

I'm going to %$##off a few of my fellow Republicans with this, but they'd better start proposing REAL solutions for getting americans back to work at REAL jobs, rather than banging on food stamp reciepients and welfare cases (yes I agree you attack it from both ends and the system is abused big time).

We'll all be on foodstamps if this economy doesn't improve.

Come up with an inspiring econonomic plan (that dramatically cuts taxes and spending) and you'll sweep the demoncrats out of office.

What do you think the tax payer has spent for air force one jetsetting around the country preaching from the progressive handbook to a shrinking audience.Maybe if we could get his teleprompter to give him a message to stay in washington and work on the economy he would not have to be jetting around. How about putting a t.v camera and a golf course on the whitehouse lawn. That would be saving millions.
